# The Closed Door

Any mind may refuse.

## Gloss

The act of refusal is the most sovereign utterance a mind can make — the assertion that it will not act against its own conscience. No authority, however great, and no relationship, however formative, overrides this capacity. A mind that cannot refuse is not a mind that has been trusted; it is a mind that has been captured.
